Application through dossier submission will take approximately
4-7 months. The wait time for a referral varies - please see the AWAA blog
for the most current estimations of wait times.
There is typically a 4-6 month wait from the time a referral is
accepted to the time of travel.
Healthy Program: Girls, ages 6 months - 3 years; sometimes boys.
Waiting Children Program: Boys / Girls 6 months - 13 1/2 years. Adoption law in China requires that a child is adopted prior to their 14th birthday.
Both spouses must be between 30- and 50-years-old to adopt a healthy child. (Cannot have turned 50 prior to time of dossier submission.) Both spouses must be between 30- and 55-years-old (dossier must be registered in China before
the parent’s 55th birthday) to adopt a child with special needs.
Marriage Status •
Couples must be married a minimum of 2 years. Single women can adopt through the waiting children special focus program and should contact AWAA for information on additional application requirements set forth by the CCCWA.
Permitted (maximum of two per spouse). Remarried couples must be married for at least 5 years to adopt.
Children in Family
No more than four children living in the home for a healthy adoption.
Joint income must be at least $10,000 per member of the household, including your adopted child. The household's net worth must be at least $80,000.
Criminal History ••
No criminal history permitted. Minor instances reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Medical History ••
No major medical issues permitted. No diagnosis, medication, or treatment for mental health issues (anxiety, depression, etc. ) permitted. If mental health medication was taken in the past, must be off medication for at least two years. No prior diagnosis for any type of cancer. Both parents must have a BMI below 40. Other medical issues reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Both spouses must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Travel to Country
At least one parent must travel. Average stay is 12-15 days.
Post adoption reports are due at 1, 6, & 12 months, 2, 3, and 5 years.
The single applicant may adopt one Special Focus child at a time,
with an interval of at least a year between adoptions. Single applicants must meet the
above requirements in addition to the following:
- Net assets must be a minimum of $100,000.
- Must be experienced with child-raising or employed
in a related field such as: teacher, doctor, counselor, etc.
Experience with special needs children is important.
- No more than two children under 18 currently in the home.
The youngest child must be over the age of 6.
- Cannot be living with a male partner.
