Processing Time
|
Application through arriving home with child is dependent upon child request. Approximate timeframe is 12-24 months.

Children Available
|
3 months - 15 years are available, with an option to adopt a sibling group. Both healthy boys and girls are available.

Parents' Ages
|
In order to adopt a child, applicants must be at least 25-years-old, and both parents must be no more than 50 years older than the child

|
Marriage Status
|
Couples must be married for a minimum of 2 years at the time of application. Single women may adopt from Ethiopia.

Divorce
|
Permitted, but a maximum of two per spouse. (AWAA restriction)

Children in Family
|
Families with five or more children in the home cannot adopt from Ethiopia. Ethiopia also has stipulations for families with young children in the home. Because of this, families cannot apply to America World until their youngest is 18 months old and cannot submit a dossier to Ethiopia until the child is 24 months old. Families that become pregnant during the adoption process will be required to withdraw until their child is 18 months old.

Income
|
Joint income must be at least $10,000 per member of the household, including your adopted child. A single mother's income be at least $30,000. (AWAA restrictions)

Criminal History
|
No criminal record permitted.

Medical History
|
Medications and mental health diagnoses,treatment, and medications (e.g., antidepressants, anti-anxiety) are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Eligibility is determined by review of a doctor's letter detailing the normal issues: diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, effect on life expectancy, and ability to parent by adoption.

Travel to Country
|
At least one parent must travel. The average stay in Ethiopia is approximately 1 week.
