NOTE: Due to a quota imposed by the Haitian Government, AWAA’s Haiti Program is currently limiting the intake of new applicants seeking to adopt a child under 24 months old at time of referral. Families are welcome to apply if they are open to a child over 24 months old at time of referral.
From dossier submission to arriving home with a child is 18 - 24 months. The greatest determining factor is the adoptive family's child request information.
The children available from Haiti include infants to 15 years of age. Healthy boys and girls are available for adoption, as well as children with special needs. Sibling groups and unrelated children are also available.
One parent must be 30 years old. Both parents must be under the age of 50. Single women must be between the ages 35-50.
Married couples and single women may adopt from Haiti. Married couples must be married a minimum of 5 years.
No more than two divorces permitted per family.
Children in Family
There is no limit to the number of biological or adopted children in the home.
Families must be able to show they can adequately provide financially for their children. A family’s income and full financial status will be evaluated as part of the adoption process.
No criminal history permitted.
Applicants must show that they are physically and mentally fit to parent a child by adoption. A letter from your physicial and a psychological report will be required along with the home study report.
Travel to Country
This is a two-trip process. Both parents must travel to meet their child and file I600 in Haiti
(14 days) and again to bring the child home (~7 days).
Post adoption reports are due at 1, 6, 12 & 18 months, 2, 3, 4 and 5 years. The reports at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months are written by a social worker and the remaining reports are self reports written by the family.
