Domestic and International Home Studies

The home study is one of the first and most important steps in the adoption journey. It is a required process that prepares and approves your family to adopt, while equipping you with the education and support you need to move forward with confidence.

America World provides domestic and international adoption home studies for families living in our 17 licensed states, including families working with other adoption agencies, consultants, or attorneys.

What Is a Home Study?

A home study is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a licensed social worker that evaluates your readiness to adopt. It includes education, interviews, background clearances, and a home visit. It results in an official written report.

This report confirms that you are prepared to provide a safe, stable, and loving home. It is designed to be a supportive experience, helping you grow in confidence and preparation for parenthood through adoption.

What to Expect During the Home Study Process

Your home study typically includes:

  • Personal Visits You will meet with a licensed social worker for several visits, including at least one in your home.

  • Education and Preparation — You will receive training and guidance to prepare for adoptive parenting.

  • Background Clearances — State and federal background checks and child abuse clearances are completed.

  • Document Collection — Medical forms, financial statements, references, and other required documents are gathered.

  • Written Home Study Report — Your social worker prepares a detailed report recommending you as adoptive parents.

Most families complete their home study within 2 to 5 months, and the cost ranges from $2,500 to $3,000.
