Adoption Myths and Truths

Taking the first step toward adoption can feel overwhelming for many families. America World partners with countries where thousands of children are waiting for loving families. Unfortunately, misconceptions about international adoption often stop families before they even begin. Below, we address some of the most common myths and share the facts that can help you take the first step toward growing your family.

Myth 1: International Adoption Is Prohibitively Expensive.

Fact: Most international adoptions cost about as much as a new car. There are also numerous ways to fund your adoption, including adoption grants, fundraising, and the Federal Adoption Tax Credit (up to $17,280 per adoption in 2025 for most families). Many America World families cover much of the cost through these options.

We provide total transparency in adoption costs, covering everything from home studies to travel and in-country lodging. Learn more about funding your adoption on our Financing Adoption page.

Myth 2: Children Adopted Internationally Are All Disabled.

Fact: While “healthy” infants and toddlers are harder to find, many children available for adoption have minor or correctable needs. These can include cleft lip/palate, heart defects, hearing or vision issues, limb differences, developmental delays, or other conditions — many of which are surgically corrected before adoption.

Families can choose which special needs they are comfortable with, ensuring matches fit their circumstances. Healthy older children are also available in most programs.

Myth 3: International Adoption Is Corrupt.

Fact: Like any system, adoption can be subject to misconduct. That’s why working with an ethical, experienced, and accredited adoption agency is critical. America World is Hague-accredited, ensuring accountability on the U.S. side and adherence to international standards.

For every negative story, there are thousands of successful adoptions placing children in loving Christian homes. Read more about our adoption ethics and standards.

Myth 4: International Adoption Takes Many Years to Complete.

Fact: Many America World families complete their adoption within 24 months of application. Some of this time depends on how quickly families submit their paperwork (dossier). Timelines vary by country, but now is an excellent time to start, as thousands of children are waiting for families.

Myth 5: The Birthmother Can Take Your Child Back.

Fact: Once an international adoption is finalized in court, your child is legally your child. Unlike in some rare domestic adoption cases, international adoption finalization guarantees your parental rights.

Myth 6: International Adoption Is Not in the Best Interest of the Child.

Fact: America World believes every child thrives best in a family. Below are our priorities for vulnerable children without families:

  1. Reunification with family whenever possible

  2. Domestic adoption to remain in their culture and community

  3. International adoption when the above options aren’t possible

Many children remain in institutions due to a lack of family placement. International adoption through a reputable agency ensures children have the loving, permanent homes they deserve.
