When Meseret first started taking saxophone lessons, there was one problem: there weren't enough instruments for everyone.

She would wait for hours at school just for a chance to practice.

For a young musician eager to learn, those hours mattered. Every minute she spent waiting was a minute she couldn't spend playing, improving, and discovering what she could do.

Suddenly, she didn't have to wait for someone else to finish. She didn't have to borrow time in a crowded practice room. She could take her saxophone home and practice whenever she wanted.

From the Sidelines to the Stage

Today, Meseret plays saxophone in front of audiences at youth musician ceremonies and alongside a female musicians' group. The girl who once had to wait on the sidelines is now the one standing in front of the crowd.

Her saxophone didn't just give her an instrument. It gave her time, and she knew what to do with it.

Learning Something New

But music isn't the only way Meseret is building her future.

With more time and opportunity, she decided to take on something new: a year-long videography program. She recently graduated, adding another skill to the growing list of things she's learning.

She's already gaining experience in another area, too. Meseret works as a waitress at a well-known Korean restaurant, and she's even been teaching herself Korean along the way.

A Future She Can Build With Her Brother

And there's a reason her videography skills matter so much to her.

Meseret has a brother who grew up in a different orphanage and is now living independently. She dreams of building a career alongside him — her work in videography and his work in a related field — so they can grow professionally together.
